Best EHR for PMHNP Private Practice: What Solo NPs Use

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners on Single Aim often ask which EHR they should use for their private practice. To answer that question, we looked at the EHRs used by 370 solo PMHNPs. This article offers a view into the systems other PMHNPs chose for their practices.

Key Findings
  • SimplePractice was the most common choice, with 23.1% of solo PMHNPs using it.
  • Solo PMHNPs used 31 different EHRs and services, including Headway and Alma.
  • About 75% of solo PMHNPs use a mental health platform such as Headway or Alma, even though only 13.2% named one when asked about their EHR.

What Is the Best EHR for PMHNP Private Practice?

Based on what solo PMHNPs in our sample use, the simplest answer is SimplePractice. It was used by 23.1% of PMHNPs, giving it a clear lead.

CharmHealth was the second most common choice at 9.4%. Tebra followed at 8.1%, while Headway and PracticeQ/IntakeQ were each used by 7.7%.

SimplePractice has a meaningful lead, but solo PMHNP choices were spread across 31 different EHRs and services.

The ranking shows which systems PMHNPs have selected and put into practice, making it a useful starting point for choosing which systems to evaluate.

How Common Are Headway, Alma, and Other Mental Health Platforms?

When asked which EHR they use, 10.7% of PMHNPs named Headway. A total of 13.2% named Headway or another mental health platform.

But that significantly understates how many PMHNPs use these services. Separate Single Aim data shows that 75% of solo PMHNPs use at least one mental health platform, such as Headway, Alma, Grow Therapy, or Rula.

The gap likely reflects how PMHNPs think about these services. When asked which EHR they use, most name the system they consider their primary patient record. They may still use Headway, Alma, or another platform alongside it.

Some PMHNPs also use more than one platform. These services are much more common in solo PMHNP practices than the EHR responses initially suggest. Single Aim's guide to partnering with mental health platforms as a Nurse Practitioner covers what to consider when using them.

What Should a Solo PMHNP Take From This Data?

If you are opening a PMHNP private practice, SimplePractice is the most obvious system to include in your initial review. It is the clear leader among solo PMHNPs in the Single Aim sample.

Other common choices include CharmHealth, Tebra, PracticeQ/IntakeQ, TherapyNotes, Valant, and ICANotes.

It is also helpful to think about your primary EHR separately from services like Headway and Alma. Many PMHNPs use both an EHR and one or more mental health platforms. The data can narrow the field, while the needs of your practice will determine which system is the best fit.

Methodology

We analyzed 370 Single Aim collaboration-intake submissions from solo PMHNPs received between June 29 and August 18, 2026.

The EHR ranking is based on 234 solo PMHNPs.

We combined obvious spelling and naming variations. For example, PracticeQ and IntakeQ were treated as the same system. The ranking includes PMHNPs who named an EHR or service they use.

The platform analysis comes from a separate survey of PMHNPs coming to Single Aim. They were asked whether they were credentialed and whether they used a platform for credentialing.

The data reflects the EHR choices of solo PMHNPs using Single Aim.

Choosing an EHR is one part of opening a psychiatric practice. PMHNPs who also need physician collaboration can read Single Aim's guide to working with a collaborating psychiatrist or browse collaborating physicians for mental health practices.
