Are there any proximity or in-person requirements between an NP and collaborating physician in Kentucky?

Kentucky does not impose a general proximity or on-site requirement between an APRN (NP) and the collaborating physician; Kentucky law emphasizes collaboration and communication rather than co-location34. For controlled substances, a CAPA-CS does impose specific meeting requirements that may be satisfied in person or via video12.

CAPA-CS meeting schedule for controlled substances:

  • Year 1: Meet at least quarterly, either in person or via video; telephonic meetings are permitted when in-person or video is not feasible, with documented summaries retained by both parties1.
  • Years 2–4: Meet at least biannually in person or via video, with the same documentation expectations2.

For nonscheduled legend drugs under a CAPA-NS, there is no mandated in-person meeting cadence; instead, the written agreement must describe how the APRN and physician will collaborate and communicate about prescribing3.
