Are there any proximity or in-person requirements between an NP and collaborating physician in New Jersey?

New Jersey does not impose a fixed proximity or mandatory in-person meeting requirement between an NP and the collaborating physician. Instead, when an APN prescribes, the collaborating physician must be either present or readily available through electronic communications in both inpatient and other practice settings12.

Additionally, the required joint protocol must identify the means for direct communication and describe arrangements ensuring the collaborating physician (or peer coverage) is accessible and available3. Together, these provisions emphasize accessibility and communication rather than a set physical distance or on-site presence.
