Are there any proximity or in-person requirements between an NP and collaborating physician in Virginia?

Virginia does not impose specific proximity or in-person requirements between an NP and the collaborating physician. Any on-site visits or meetings are set by the parties in the practice agreement; the agreement may include chart reviews and site visits at a frequency determined by the patient care team123.

Collaboration in Virginia is defined as a communication and decision-making process among the patient care team, which can be fulfilled without mandated physical presence or distance parameters4.

For NPs authorized for autonomous practice, no practice agreement is required, and there is likewise no specified proximity or in-person meeting mandate; these NPs must consult and collaborate based on clinical conditions and maintain a plan for referral of complex cases and emergencies5.
