
In most cases, no — Texas NPs generally cannot prescribe Adderall (amphetamine/dextroamphetamine), a Schedule II stimulant, unless they are prescribing under one of the state’s narrow Schedule II exceptions.2
Texas permits APRNs to prescribe Schedule III-V controlled substances under prescriptive authority rules, but that general authority does not create general Schedule II stimulant prescribing authority.1 For Adderall, Schedule II prescribing is limited to hospital facility-based practice or hospice/terminal-care plan-of-care contexts.2
An NP prescribing controlled substances in Texas also needs the applicable prescriptive authority arrangement and DEA registration; Schedule III-V refills beyond the initial 90-day supply have a physician-consultation limit, but those Schedule III-V rules do not independently authorize Adderall prescribing.1
