Yes, but with limits — Florida NPs may prescribe amphetamine, which is Schedule II in Florida, when authorized, but a non-psychiatric APRN is generally limited to a 7-day supply.31
The psychiatric-medication exception to the 7-day Schedule II cap applies only when a psychiatric nurse prescribes the psychiatric medication.1 If the patient is younger than 18, only a psychiatric nurse may prescribe psychiatric mental health controlled substances.2
APRN controlled-substance prescribing must match the APRN's education, training, experience, and protocol or qualifying autonomous primary-care authority. The APRN also needs qualifying graduate education for controlled-substance prescribing and DEA registration.
Autonomous APRN registration does not create general autonomous psychiatric-specialty authority. Before prescribing controlled substances, Florida prescribers generally must review the PDMP unless a statutory exception applies.4
