Yes — North Carolina NPs with active North Carolina NP approval and prescriptive authority may prescribe amphetamine, a Schedule II stimulant,1 when the prescription is within the NP’s population focus, education, national certification, scope, and competence.2 For Schedule II stimulant prescribing, the authority also must be established in the collaborative practice agreement, and the NP must have DEA authority with a primary supervising physician authorized for at least the same controlled-substance schedules.3 Controlled-substance prescriptions must include the NP’s DEA number and be documented in the patient record. North Carolina NPs may not prescribe controlled substances for themselves, their supervising physician, immediate family members, household members, or intimate partners.
STOP Act opioid rules for targeted controlled substances generally do not apply to ADHD stimulants such as amphetamine.4
