Can an NP prescribe Codeine in Texas?

It depends on the formulation — whether a Texas NP can prescribe codeine depends on the formulation’s DEA schedule. Codeine’s DEA schedule varies by formulation, so Schedule III-V codeine products are treated differently from Schedule II codeine products.

For Schedule III-V codeine, Texas APRNs may prescribe under prescriptive authority rules, including Schedule III-V prescription/refill limits when applicable.1 For Schedule II codeine, the narrow delegation limitation applies: it is limited to hospital facility-based practice or hospice/terminal-care plan-of-care contexts.2

A Texas NP prescribing controlled substances must have the required prescriptive authority agreement and DEA registration when prescribing controlled substances. Do not assume all codeine products are treated the same; the formulation’s schedule controls the analysis.
