Can an NP prescribe Klonopin in California?

Yes — California nurse practitioners may prescribe Klonopin (clonazepam), a Schedule IV benzodiazepine, when they have controlled-substance furnishing authority, DEA registration, and comply with applicable California protocol, scope, and CURES requirements.124

For NPs practicing under standardized procedures, Klonopin must be specified in the procedure.1 Qualifying Section 2837.103 or 2837.104 NPs may prescribe controlled substances without standardized procedures when that statutory pathway applies.3
