Can an NP prescribe Ritalin in Florida?

Yes, with limits — Florida NPs may prescribe Ritalin (methylphenidate), a Schedule II controlled substance, when authorized, but a non-psychiatric APRN is generally limited to a 7-day supply.31 The 7-day Schedule II cap does not apply when a psychiatric nurse prescribes a psychiatric medication.1

For Ritalin prescribing, Florida APRNs need education, training, experience, and protocol or qualifying autonomous primary-care authority, qualifying graduate education for controlled-substance prescribing, and DEA registration; autonomous APRN registration does not create general autonomous psychiatric-specialty authority. Only a psychiatric nurse may prescribe psychiatric mental-health controlled substances to a patient younger than 18.2 Florida also generally requires PDMP review before prescribing a controlled substance unless a statutory exception applies.4
