Can an NP prescribe Schedule 2 in Ohio?

In Ohio, nurse practitioners can prescribe Schedule II controlled substances only under very narrow conditions. Ohio law permits APRNs to prescribe Schedules III–V, and allows Schedule II prescribing only if specific criteria are met1. An NP may issue a Schedule II prescription only when the patient has a terminal condition, a physician initially prescribed the medication, and the amount is limited to a single 72-hour supply2.

An APRN’s prescriptive authority may not exceed that of the collaborating physician3. The required standard care arrangement must also address the use of Schedule II controlled substances and include quality assurance provisions for prescribing, with periodic chart review that covers Schedule II prescribing at least annually by the collaborating physician45.
