Yes. In Virginia, nurse practitioners can prescribe Schedule II controlled substances when authorized in their practice agreement or through Boards-approved autonomous practice. State law expressly allows APRNs to prescribe controlled substances from Schedules II through IV within the parameters set by their practice agreement or autonomous practice authorization1.

The practice agreement, jointly developed with the patient care team physician, must describe the APRN’s prescriptive authority and identify which controlled substances the APRN may or may not prescribe; it may also restrict prescriptive authority12. APRNs may qualify for autonomous practice upon meeting experience and attestation requirements approved by the Boards, and when authorized, may prescribe Schedules II–IV consistent with their training and scope31.
