Yes — California NPs may prescribe testosterone, a Schedule III controlled substance, when they have an active California NP furnishing number, Schedule III controlled-substance authority, DEA registration, and comply with applicable California protocol, scope, and CURES requirements.1235
Under California’s standardized-procedure pathway, Schedule II–V controlled substances must be authorized and specified in the standardized procedure, and Schedule III drugs such as testosterone must be furnished or ordered under a patient-specific protocol approved by the treating or supervising physician.12
Qualifying Section 2837.103 or 2837.104 NPs may prescribe controlled substances without standardized procedures when that statutory pathway applies.4 California prescribers also generally must consult CURES before first prescribing Schedule II, III, or IV controlled substances and periodically thereafter if continued unless exempt.5
NPs must also practice within their education, training, competence, and scope.
