Can an NP prescribe Tramadol in Texas?

Yes — Texas NPs can prescribe tramadol, a Schedule IV controlled substance, when the prescription is delegated under a prescriptive authority agreement and controlled-substance requirements are met.12

Texas NPs also need DEA registration when prescribing controlled substances, including tramadol. For tramadol prescribing, Texas APRN authority for Schedule III-V controlled substances is subject to limits, including 90-day supply/refill limits and physician consultation for refills beyond the initial 90-day supply.1
