Can an NP prescribe Valium in Texas?

Yes — Texas nurse practitioners can prescribe Valium (diazepam), a Schedule IV benzodiazepine, when the prescribing is delegated through a prescriptive authority agreement and controlled-substance requirements are met.12

For Schedule III-V controlled substances, Texas rules include prescription and refill limits, including a 90-day supply limit and physician consultation for refills beyond the initial 90-day supply.1 A Texas NP also needs DEA registration when prescribing controlled substances.
