Only in narrow circumstances — a California NP may prescribe Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine), a Schedule II stimulant, only when Schedule II furnishing requirements are met or the NP qualifies under California’s 103/104 independent-practice pathway.14
For NPs using standardized procedures, the Schedule II drug must be specified in the standardized procedure, and Schedule II or III controlled substances must be furnished or ordered under a patient-specific protocol approved by the treating or supervising physician.12 The NP also needs an active California NP furnishing number. Schedule II furnishing also requires DEA registration and Schedule II continuing education.3
Qualifying 103/104 NPs may prescribe controlled substances without standardized procedures.4 CURES review generally applies before Schedule II-IV controlled-substance prescribing and periodically thereafter unless an exemption applies.5 In all cases, prescribing must remain within the NP’s education, training, competence, scope, and any applicable protocols or 103/104 independent-practice authority.
