Can an NP prescribe Xanax in Texas?

Yes — Texas NPs can prescribe Xanax (alprazolam), a Schedule IV benzodiazepine, when the prescription is delegated under a prescriptive authority agreement and controlled-substance requirements are met.12

For Xanax, Texas APRN authority covers Schedule III-V controlled substances, subject to limits including a 90-day supply/refill framework and physician consultation for refills beyond the initial 90-day supply.1 The NP must also have the required controlled-substance authority, including DEA registration when prescribing controlled substances.
