How many charts must a collaborating physician review for a Michigan NP?

A collaborating physician is not required to review a set number of NP charts in Michigan. Michigan law does not specify a fixed number or percentage of chart reviews for NPs. Instead, under the Public Health Code’s definition of supervision, the physician must be continuously available and must review the NP’s practice and records on a regularly scheduled basis1.

While chart-review quotas are not mandated, for controlled-substance delegation the physician must conduct an annual review and update of the written authorization, recording each review date on the authorization2.

Practically, collaborating teams may outline chart-review expectations in their protocols to align with Michigan’s supervision standard, including regular record review, consultation, and predetermined procedures and drug protocols1.
