How many charts must a collaborating physician review for a New York NP?

In New York, the law does not set a specific number of charts a collaborating physician must review for a nurse practitioner. Instead, the written collaborative practice agreement must require timely patient record review, occurring no less often than every three months12.

Because the statute and regulations speak to frequency rather than volume, the parties should define the scope and process of chart review in the agreement (e.g., which records, criteria, and workflow) so long as the quarterly minimum is met. The agreement must also include provisions for resolving clinical disagreements, referrals, and other collaboration terms, alongside the chart review schedule12.
