How many charts must a collaborating physician review for a Virginia NP?

In Virginia, the number of NP charts a collaborating physician must review is not fixed by law. Instead, chart review is governed by the NP–physician practice agreement and must occur periodically at a frequency set by the patient care team.123

NPs authorized for autonomous practice do not need a practice agreement, so no physician chart-review requirement applies. Autonomous APRNs must practice within their training, consult and collaborate as clinically appropriate, and maintain a referral plan for complex cases and emergencies.4

Because statutes and regulations set no numeric quota, teams should specify the method and frequency of chart review in the practice agreement and keep the agreement available for Board review upon request.1
