How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in Michigan?

A physician in Michigan may supervise an unlimited number of nurse practitioners; Michigan law sets no maximum number of APRNs with whom a physician may enter into written authorizations. The state’s delegation rules specify the required contents and annual review of written authorizations but do not impose a numeric cap on supervisees1.

When supervision applies, Michigan’s Public Health Code defines supervision as oversight with continuous access for direct communication, regular review and consultation, and use of predetermined procedures and drug protocols2.

  • Continuous availability of direct communication (in person, phone, or telecommunication)
  • Regularly scheduled availability for practice review, consultation, record review, and education
  • Predetermined procedures and drug protocols
