How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in New Jersey?

A physician may supervise any number of nurse practitioners in New Jersey. The state does not impose a maximum cap; collaboration is defined as an ongoing practice relationship between an APN and a physician1. For prescribing, APNs must have a written joint protocol with a collaborating physician2.

Because the regulations focus on collaboration rather than numeric limits, ensure your joint protocol is maintained at each practice site and reviewed at least annually3, and that it addresses required elements such as direct communication methods and periodic record review4. This framework supports safe practice without restricting the number of APN supervisees1.
