How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in New York?

A physician in New York can supervise nurse practitioners via written practice agreements, and may enter into agreements with no more than four (4) NPs who are not located on the same physical premises as the physician1. The statute does not set a numerical cap for NPs practicing on the same physical premises1.

This limit applies only to written practice agreements. NPs with more than 3,600 hours of practice are not required to work under a written agreement and instead must maintain ongoing collaborative relationships with physicians or a hospital, so the four off-site cap does not apply in those cases2.
