How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in South Carolina?

In South Carolina, the number of nurse practitioners a physician can supervise is capped at six full-time equivalent (FTE) clinicians, counted together with physician assistants. Practically, this means a physician may work with up to six FTE APRNs (or any APRN/PA combination totaling six FTEs) in clinical practice at any one time1.

Physicians may work with more than six individual APRNs and/or PAs if their combined part-time hours do not exceed six FTEs23. These ratio limits do not apply when the physician is serving only as a back-up physician23. Note that South Carolina law describes this relationship as physicians “working with” and “supporting” APRNs rather than using the term “supervise”2.
