How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in Tennessee?

A physician in Tennessee may supervise any number of nurse practitioners; there is no statutory cap on NP supervisees1. Board of Medical Examiners guidance advises physicians to determine an appropriate number at the practice level based on good medical practice and their ability to meet supervision duties1.

In practice, the appropriate number is limited by the physician’s capacity to fulfill required supervision tasks. These include availability for consultation, ongoing chart review, and regular site visits to remote practice locations234.

  • Availability: The supervising physician must be available for consultation at all times or arrange for a substitute physician2.
  • Chart review: Personally review at least 20% of the NP’s charts every 30 days3.
  • Site visits: Visit any remote site at least once every 30 days4.
