How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in Virginia?

A physician may supervise up to six nurse practitioners (APRNs) in Virginia at any one time1; if the APRNs are licensed in the psychiatric-mental health category, the physician may supervise up to ten1. These limits apply to physicians serving as the patient care team physician within practice agreements.

APRNs authorized for autonomous practice by the Boards do not require a patient care team physician, so these supervision caps do not apply in those cases2.
