What are the requirements of a physician to collaborate with a Connecticut NP?

To collaborate with a Connecticut NP (APRN), a physician must be licensed in Connecticut and be educated, trained, or have relevant experience related to the APRN’s work¹. During the APRN’s first three years after initial Connecticut licensure, the collaboration must be formalized in a written collaborative agreement with that physician¹.

The written collaborative agreement must address¹:

• A reasonable and appropriate level of consultation and referral;
• Coverage for patients when the APRN is absent;
• A method to review patient outcomes, including review of medical therapeutics, corrective measures, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures the APRN may prescribe, dispense, and administer;
• A method of disclosure of the APRN–physician relationship to patients; and
• The level of Schedule II and III controlled substances the APRN may prescribe.

Collaboration is defined as a mutually agreed-upon relationship between the APRN and a physician who meets these qualifications related to the APRN’s work¹.
