In Illinois, a collaborative practice agreement is called a “written collaborative agreement” between the APRN and a collaborating physician12. A written collaborative agreement is required until the APRN is granted full practice authority3, and a copy of the signed agreement must be available to the Department upon request4.
The written collaborative agreement must describe the APRN–physician relationship, the categories of care, treatment, or procedures the APRN will provide, and the methods of communication (which may be in person or via telecommunication); it does not require the physician’s personal physical presence56. A collaborating physician may also delegate prescriptive authority to the APRN through the written collaborative agreement, consistent with Illinois law7.
