In New York, a collaborative practice agreement is called a written practice agreement, and it must be paired with written practice protocols1. NPs practice within their specialty under this agreement and protocols in collaboration with a qualified physician, unless they have more than 3,600 hours of practice, in which case formal agreements and protocols are not required but collaborative relationships must be maintained2.

The written practice agreement must include procedures for resolving clinical disagreements, require physician review of patient records at least every three months, and outline referral/consultation processes and coverage for absences, among other terms34. The accompanying practice protocols must define the NP’s area of practice, case management (including diagnosis, treatment, and recordkeeping), be filed with the Education Department within 90 days of starting practice, and may be reviewed by the Department for compliance with accepted standards567.
