In North Carolina, the NP–physician collaborative practice agreement is simply called a collaborative practice agreement, and it must be in place with a primary supervising physician for an NP to perform medical acts12.

By rule, the collaborative practice agreement is the arrangement that ensures continuous availability for supervision, consultation, collaboration, referral, and evaluation of care between the NP and physician1. It must, at minimum, include the following3:

  • A list of the drugs, devices, medical treatments, tests, and procedures the NP may prescribe, order, and perform at each practice site.
  • A predetermined plan for emergency services.
