In New York, nurse practitioners can prescribe controlled substances in Schedules II–V (not Schedule I). All controlled-substance prescribing is subject to the same core prescriptive requirements that apply to non-controlled drugs1. To prescribe controlled substances, NPs must obtain a DEA registration and New York State Official Prescription Forms or authorization to prescribe controlled substances from the Department of Health’s Bureau of Narcotics Administration2.
NPs must also hold New York prescriptive certification. They may issue prescriptions for drugs, devices, and immunizing agents pursuant to Education Law after completing instruction satisfactory to the Department in New York and federal prescription laws and recordkeeping34.
