In Ohio, a nurse practitioner may prescribe certain schedule drugs: Schedule III–V controlled substances generally, and Schedule II only under narrow conditions. Schedule II prescriptions are permitted only when the patient has a terminal condition, a physician initially prescribed the drug, and the NP’s prescription is limited to a single 72-hour supply1.
An NP’s prescriptive authority cannot exceed that of the collaborating physician2. The required standard care arrangement must outline prescribing parameters and include provisions for any Schedule II use, opioid prescribing to minors, and obtaining/reviewing OARRS reports3.
Additional safeguards apply to opioids. Ohio law imposes special requirements for opioid prescribing and for opioid analgesics to minors4. To prescribe any controlled substances, the NP must hold a DEA registration number5.
