A New York NP does need a DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances. To issue controlled substance prescriptions, NPs must obtain a federal DEA number and secure New York State Official Prescription Forms or state authorization to prescribe controlled substances from the Department of Health’s Bureau of Narcotic Administration1.
In addition to federal registration, New York requires NPs to be authorized to prescribe by completing Department-approved pharmacology and instruction in state and federal prescribing laws, with an NP certificate indicating prescriptive authority23. Prescription forms used by NPs must include the NP’s name, certificate number, office address, and telephone number4.
