How many nurse practitioners can a physician supervise in Wisconsin?

A physician may supervise (collaborate with) any number of nurse practitioners in Wisconsin; state law does not set a maximum number of APNP collaborative relationships. Wisconsin requires APNPs to work in a documented collaborative relationship with a physician or dentist, but does not impose a numerical cap1.

Under Wisconsin Board of Nursing rules, a collaborative relationship means the APNP works with the physician or dentist, in each other’s presence when necessary, to deliver health care services within their training, education, and experience, and the APNP must document this relationship1. Healthcare teams should ensure their protocols reflect this collaboration and keep records up to date.
